  • Indian government unhappy with Buddhist leader

The Indian government is very unhappy with Ogyen Trinley Dorje (the 17th Karmapa Lama) for obtaining citizenship of Dominica through the country’s Citizenship by Investment Program.

Dorje, who both China & the Dalai Lama recognize as the legitimate leader of the Karma Kagyu Sect, fled from Tibet & had been staying in India for the past 18 years. India, who had never recognized Dorje as the legitimate leader of the sect, treated the spiritual leader as an ‘honoured guest’ since his arrival as a teenager.

About a year ago, India permitted the Karmapa to travel to the US for medical treatment. The Karmapa took this opportunity to apply for citizenship in Dominica.

Hence, the dismay by New Delhi, which considered this move by the Tibetan spiritual leader as a ‘slap in the face’. Indian authorities have expressed that they expected the Karmapa to at least inform the government of his intention.

Citizenship by Investment Programs have become very popular amongst investors around the world, with many countries now offering direct citizenship within very short periods of time in exchange for investments in specified categories in their respective countries.
